Laughing Whitefish Falls

Laughing Whitefish Falls Scenic Site

The Laughing Whitefish Falls are located about three miles North of Sundell off of M94. I’ve included a map of the location for those who aren’t familiar with the area, which includes me because I drove by the rode twice. It’s really not hard to find. The road leading to the Laughing Whitefish Falls takes you through a few miles of farm country on rough pavement. The gravel road leading the last ½ mile to the parking area was in better shape than the paved road when I went in. The parking area has an outhouse and a picnic area complete with water pump. The outdoor facility was actually very clean!

The trail leading into the falls is very well defined and maintained. The hike is a good mile in length, but it is an easy walk. For the most part the trail travels through northern deciduous forest. It’s actually quite beautiful. When I was there the Trilliums were in bloom and the trees were just starting to green up. The Mosquitoes were also abundant so I recommend wearing lots of repellent and a head net.

The falls themselves are beautiful. They drop 100’ of a limestone bluff into the ravine bellow. There is a very sturdy stairwell leading to the bottom of the falls complete with seating on several levels. I took full advantage of these on the way back up.

Laughing Whitefish State Park

This is a State Park and according to the State of Michigan you need a Recreation Passport to enter. You can purchase one of these at most State Parks or you can purchase one when you buy your license plate. The park is 960 acres in size and offers wildlife viewing, hiking trails, hunting, the picnic area, and fishing.

I carried my fishing pole in with me and attempted to fish for Trout below the falls. I did catch a few Creek Chubs and that was it. Above the falls the water was slow moving and choked with Tag Alders. I had no luck there either. We did see a good variety of birds and a few squirrels on the trail, but no large game. I had no idea that the North Country Trail crossed the end of the park or I would have hiked a section of it, maybe next time.

In all this is a great little park and the falls are gorgeous. They are well worth the short hike!
