Alder Falls – Marquette County Michigan
Alder Falls is nestled among some amazing old growth Hemlocks. The site is quite beautiful. The walk to the falls is fairly easy the last portion being a little steep. The main portion of the falls cascades down a 20′ tall rock face into the creek below. In all the falls are approximately 30′ in height. There are a few more drops above Alder Falls, but this is the main attraction. It is to my understanding that there are still some Brook Trout in Alder Creek so bring a fishing pole (and fishing license) as well as your camera.
Directions to Alder Falls
From Cram’s General Store head South on Co. Rd. 550 (Big Bay Road) approximately 2.7 and turn right on Alder Creek Truck Trail. There is now sign so when you cross Alder Creek look for a pole barn style garage on your right. 50 yards past that on your right will be a two track road leading into the woods. This is actually the intersection of two roads. You will want to head straight into the woods. When I was there someone had done some excavation on the left at the head of the trail. The truck trail is a bit rough, but was passable when I was there. You will travel about .6 miles up the Truck Trail watching for a parking spot and sign nailed to a tree. The sign is bit high so you may need to look up a bit. From there it is a short walk down to Alder Falls on a well-defined footpath. Remember to bring your insect repellent. When we were there the mosquitoes weren’t noticeable until you reach the falls then they ambushed us.
